Rule Changes

An overview of the changes to the rules after the Autumn 2009 session.

Match Rules

Team Composition

Teams will still, generally, consist of a minimum of 3 girls. Where a team wants to play 4 guys and 2 girls they can, but 1 guy must start in the Player Return area and comes on when the first catch is made.

Double Hit Rule

The most unpopular rule in the history of sport is being repealed!

We'll follow the UKDBA rule from now on. Once the ball has hit a player it is dead. If it then strikes a second player or is caught by a second player it has no effect. The only exception is if the first player catches the ball before it bounces in which case it counts as a catch.

5 Second Rule

A team with the majority of player still on court and the majority of balls in their half of the court have 5 seconds to make 2 valid attempts, i.e. getting rid of the majority of balls.

Where both teams have only one player remaining the team with the majority of balls has 5 seconds to make 1 valid attempt. If they still have the majority of balls the count starts again immediately.

Teams will be given 2 warnings, on the third infringement a player will be sent to the player return area. With the effect that if he is the final player for his team on the court the game will be over and the other side will win 1-0.

Spectator Interferance

Spectators who unnecessarily interfere with the balls in play are liable to be penalised. If the ball rolls right in amongst the spectators feet a gentle roll back into the court is acceptable, sticking legs and hands out and/or trying to direct the ball to a specific team or player is not.

For each offence 2 points will be deduced from their team's league points.

League Rules

Winning a match

Matches will be decided based on the number of games won, not points scored in the matches.

League Point Allocation

To reduce the possibility of a draw at the end of the league and to encourage positive play points will now be awarded as follows:

  • 30 points for winning a match
  • 20 for drawing a match
  • 10 points for losing a match
  • 2 bonus points for eliminating all of the opposing teams players in a game
  • 2 bonus points for losing a game by only 1 or 2 players

A team can then score a maximum of 44 points for winning or 24 points for losing.
