Retiring a Player

A player is out when:

  • they are struck by a legal attempt before the ball strikes any surface, player or object

  • a player from the opposing team catches their attempt cleanly

  • he leaves the court without permission from a referee (including if any part of a player touches any boundary line, or any surface beyond the boundary line, either wall or floor. The opposing team’s court is considered as being over the boundary line)

  • he uses a blocked ball and drops that blocked ball on impact from the attempt

  • a player violates any other rule and the referee calls him out or ejects him

  • a referee rules that that a player on the leading team has committed a violation of the Leading Team Possession rule

Once a player is retired he must go directly to the player return area and remain there for the duration of the game unless called back in under the Returning Players rule.

He may not act as a substitute.

As soon as a player is out any ball they touch is dead and no attempt made by them (unless started prior to being retired) will count.
