Blocked Ball: a ball used in an incoming attempt which is blocked by a player using a ball in their possession. When holding a ball, which is being used to block an incoming ball, the player’s hands and fingers will be considered to be part of the ball he is holding, while the player’s hand(s) or finger(s) are in contact with the blocking ball.

  4. a ball is thrown by a player who is out (including a returnee who has not entered through the backcourt)
  5. at the end of the game

Deliberate Drop: a player deliberately drops a ball he is holding to catch an attempt.

Driven Ball: a ball that the referee judges to have been delivered with force and intention. A driven ball may not be delivered intentionally to the head of any player.

Five Second Call: a call by the referee warning the leading team with the majority of the balls that they have no more than 5 seconds to make valid attempts such that they no longer have possession of the majority of the balls.

Illegal attempt: each of the following is an illegal attempt:

  1. kicking or punching the ball at the opposing team or at a referee;
  2. an attempt made from outside the court;
  3. a driven ball resulting in a head shot;
  4. a suicide play where the attacking player jumps directly at the defending player, in such a manner that the referee deems it to be an aggresive act,
  5. a head shot made on a junior player (unless in the opinion of the referee the junior player was able to take steps to avoid the headshot and took none or the junior player deliberately contacts the ball with his head. In this case the junior player shall be out for unsportsmanlike conduct); or
  6. any other attempt ruled as unsportsmanlike conduct by a referee.

Returning Player: a player who returns to the court after being put out as the result of a catch by his team.

Suicide Play: an attempt made by a player jumping over the opponent’s side of the court, taking off from their own side, made while the player is still in the air. Suicide plays are valid attempts, however, if the attacking player jumps directly at the defending player, in such a manner that the referee deems it to be an aggresive act, the attacking player will be ejected from the match for un-sportsmanlike conduct. In any event, the suicide player will be out once contact is made with the opposing teams court or he goes out of bounds.

Team Interference: interfering with the natural direction and/or speed of a live ball within the boundaries of the court, by a player or spectator who is not actively involved in the game.
